Assemble The Deer Hunting Stand

The diagram shown left (click to view enlarged) gives the entire list of lumber you will need to build your box deer hunting stand. You will want to cut this lumber out before taking out to the stand. The four main corner supports are made of 2x4's fastened together to create 12-ft 4x4's on location. You could opt to use 12' 4x4's instead or even 12-ft 2x4's. I have not built this stand with 12-ft 2x4's so I can not state whether or not this would be sturdy enough, but I am guessing it would be. Also, 12-ft pieces may be more difficult to transport. Cut all pieces as shown.

NOTE: In addition to the lumber listed here, you may wish to place 2x4 or 2x6 scraps or thin masonry block under each leg to keep it from sinking and also to keep it out of wet soil. Also, you may want to use additional braces fastening the stand to the tree.

Construct The Ladder
The ladder, which is more like stair steps, may be constructed by marking out 45 degree nailing lines on (2) 8ft 2x4's, , as shown below. Fasten 16" rungs in place with one deck screw and then secure with several more #12 common galvanized box nails on each side. Finally, nail on the 19" piece on the top ends of the ladder as shown below.

Cutting The Roof Pieces
For the roof, you will use either Pro-Rib metal roofing, or a product similar. To get the 5' by 3' pieces, you will either need to trim down two 6' or 8' pieces or cut a single 10' piece in half. Use tin snips and wear gloves! You may wish to assemble the roof before transporting (as shown in next step), but if you do, note that it will be a bit wider than 4 ft and will not fit as nicely in your vehicle.

A photo of all the lumber is shown below. The 4 main corner beams are shown already assembled, although you may easily assemble these on site.

A 16 ft extension ladder similar to the one shown left is nice to have. Or a 10 or 12 ft ladder.

Having another person along to help is strongly recommended!
