Deer Hunting Scent Control Steps
Here are steps to take in order to minimize your scent when hunting:
- Make sure all deer hunting clothes are washed in a scent-free laundry detergent. There are special detergents for this, but any scent-free, perfume-free detergent will work.
- Take a shower using a hunter's soap or a small amount of scent-free laundry detergent. Never use soaps or shampoos off the store shelf as these will always have some sort of scent in them! Wash yourself well with a washcloth that has been washed in unscented detergent - this will help remove dead skin cells.
- Brush teeth using plain baking soda. If you use toothpaste, use only a tiny amount and rinse very very thoroughly.
- After showering and brushing teeth, briskly dry yourself using a towel also washed in scent free soap. This will help remove more dead skin cells. Use a scent-free antiperspirant, if you use one.
- Spray your clothes with a scent killer type product. These sprays work well and I find they seem to function as an antiperspirant odor control as well.
- Avoid all odors on your way to your hunt. Drive with windows open and even place a towel/blanket down over the drivers seat that has been washed in scent-free soap.
- Even with all these precautions, hunt down wind from your trail or likely location of the deer! All of these measures help, and I have stayed undetected downwind a many times, but many other times I have gotten busted when an animal was downwind from me. Once busted for scent, you may need to relocate - deer don't forget too easily!
